It was in Bavaria that I saw the most beautiful and awe-inspiring Maypoles. Maypoles there tend to be permanent fixtures in village squares and are decorated often with intricate ornamental displays. A wreath either of real flowers or made from metal usually 'crowns' the Maypole.

Oh, they are beautiful. Saw a documentary about them once, long time ago, on Australian TV.
Bavaria is a truly magical place. When I visited it, I visited all the places that had significance in Ludwig II's life. It makes sense to me that Bavaria was the home of the 'fairytale King'.
Hunding's Hutte is one of my favourite places in the world. That Ludwig actually created a house with a huge magestic tree in the centre, thus bringing the tale of the Volsungs to life, endeared him to me forever.
I love Bavaria. The Bavarians know how to live in beauty -- the town Maypoles, the town ponds with swans, the traditional costumes, King Ludwig's castles, the Alps . . . the Munich beers. One of my happiest times was staying by lake Tegernsee south of Munich.
